I am so grateful to be able to work from home, but one thing I have noticed is that it is too easy to lose focus on your health. Before you know it you have spent hours and hours on the computer without moving. This results in you feeling stiff and sore, plus of course, you end up putting on a few pounds.
While it is important to focus on business activities it is also vital to pay attention to your mind and body. A healthy mind and body is actually much better for productivity, inspiration and motivation than expending all of your energy on your business. Here are seven tips to keep your mind and body healthy.
#1 Laugh. Laughter really is the best medicine. Make sure you take time away from your business and spent it with your friends and family. Make a point of doing at least one thing each day that makes you laugh, even if it is watching your dog hold some funny pose!
#2 Celebrate. Always celebrate both your successes and your achievements, even those things that you would consider a near miss. Don’t forget to celebrate each day for just being alive and be grateful for the health and family that you currently have. Give yourself a pat on the back, do a happy dance and be thankful for what you have in this world.
#3 Fresh Air. It is important to get outside each day and get some fresh air and sunshine. In addition to simply renewing your spirit, sunshine is scientifically proven to affect your hormones in a positive manner. In fact, your body needs lots of vitamin D produced by sunshine to operate optimally. If you can’t position your office and desk to enjoy some natural sunlight throughout the day, make sure you get outside for twenty or so minutes a day.
#4 Meditate. Meditation has long been proven to not only lengthen your life but to also improve quality of life. Even if you have trouble sitting still you can still meditate while walking and moving too. Learn more about meditation and try to integrate it into your day for better mental health.
#5 Schedule time to play. Scheduling fun sounds well, unfun, but if you don’t schedule it, you may not do it. Plan time for days off to play, schedule vacations even if they’re staycations and just enjoy the benefits of owning your own business – making your own hours! After all this was one of the reasons you were attracted to working from home in the first place.
#6 Exercise. Exercise is good for both your mind and your body. Find an activity or two that you enjoy doing: swimming, running, climbing, tennis, riding your bike – you name it. And make time to do it a few days a week. Even walking for thirty minutes outside at a brisk pace is an excellent way to get and stay in shape.
#7 Your Office. Make sure your home office is as ergonomic as possible. That includes a good chair to support your back, a desk that’s at an appropriate level to support your wrists and a computer screen that doesn’t hurt your eyes. Good lighting also makes a huge difference.
Of course you have your business goals and priorities. However, in order to continue to be able to reach those goals, it’s important to make your own mental and physical health a priority too.
Feel free to share in the comments how and if you spend time focusing on your health. Personally I try to take a short walk each day and have started going swimming once a week. Plus I am working on losing a few pounds by eating more healthily and working on self-improvement items to increase my productivity and focus.
