One thing I like to do is to get to know my customers, and I sometimes forget that they would like to do the same thing. That is get to know who I am behind. These days with so much activity online it is way too easy to hide behind a computer screen or behind the scenes of an eCommerce store.
Today you have the chance to get to know me and my family as real people.I live out in the countryside in Ontario, about an hour or so north of Toronto. It is peaceful and was a great place to bring up our boys. We are now empty nesters and my husband retired early from his job of 30+ years.
When I tell people we live on 50 acres of land, they often assume that we must own a farm. We don’t, the property is mainly treed, we spent our first three years clearing 4 acres. It was the first time we had done anything like that and we intended to clear the land with hand saws and burn the branches in a barrel. That lasted exactly one afternoon before hubby headed off to the hardware store for a chainsaw. Those first few summers we enjoyed lots of backyard fires by our pond. Wonderful memories.
At one time we owned two wonderful dogs. Our oldest, Moulson a yellow Labrador retriever made it to the ripe old age of 16 and a half. On his last weekend with us we gave him a can of beer, yes he loved his namesake Molson Dry.
We inherited our second dog when Moulson was around 11. Skyla was another lab, but black and full of life and springy. When she would hop on mice in the bush she always reminded me of Tigger from Winnie the Pooh. She still hunts mice and has actually caught lots of gold fish from our pond.
Something that you may not know is that I actually grew up in England. In a small town near Gatwick Airport – at that time we could walk to the fence at the edge of the runway and watch the planes land. Guess that is where I caught my travel bug which eventually landed me in Canada.
After school I went to college for a year and then decided it wasn’t for me. The travel bug was calling and I went and lived in Munich for one year. That was a wonderful experience and I loved the watching the Glockenspiel dance when it chimed every day. On clear days you could see the Alps. My husband’s family had a German background so knowing some German came in handy at that time.
Once my year was up I went back to England but still wanted to do something different. My grandfather was actually Canadian and I remember him telling us stories about life in Canada.
I ended up flying out just before my 21st birthday and have been here ever since. Ironically I ended up marrying the boy next door and that was just over 28 years ago. I am now officially more Canadian than British and I visited there in January of this year after a long time. It’s a wonderful country and I loved all the lambs and pheasants running around, but it just is not my home anymore.
So let’s talk about my online career.
Work wise I always wanted to have some type of business from home. When my boys were small I did daycare plus I must have tried pretty much every type of home business out there. Including Avon, Tupperware, selling Candles, delivering catalogues by hand and selling lingerie. I always made some extra money but I wasn’t fond of going out in the evenings to do home parties. Especially with our Canadian winters.
I started out online attempting to do affiliate marketing. I built tons of niche websites and wrote, what seemed like, millions of articles and never made a dime.
I then saw an advertisement in a group I was a member of for article writers. English was always one of my favorite lessons and I had even written a novel when I was 12. So I thought why not try it.
That one step launched my online career and I have not looked back since. That’s not to say that things were easy but at least I was making money online. I know and understand the importance of wanting to add to the family income in whatever way you can.
As well as offering articles I offered to upload them to article directories for people and do backlinking. This was really time consuming and bit by bit I just focused on the writing aspect.
I never really had to look for clients, I got a ton of word of mouth referrals and joined a site similar to what Fiverr is today, but you could post projects for more money. This led me to a great acquaintance and a writing gig that lasted for over three years. In fact, I was the one that ended it this year to concentrate on my own products more.
Currently the main way I earn an income is my creating and selling PLR products from my store. These types of products can also be referred to as white label products. Basically they are a product that allows the buyer to edit and reuse the content on their own website. It’s a great way for you to get content for any type of site or report that you want to put together.
As well I earn money by emailing my list and promoting other products to them. This is a great way to get started online and I definitely recommend that you build a list, no matter what type of business you are in.
There are times when I do work a lot of hours but I love the freedom that the internet lifestyle gives me overall.
Just recently we had to go and help out a family member. I was just able to take the day off without a second thought. I didn’t have to go ask permission or be worried about any type of backlash for being absent from work that day. We literally packed up and left in about 15 minutes.
Who wouldn’t love to live that way?
Now that our boys are grown my husband and I have plans. We are seriously thinking about selling our home and moving to something smaller, property wise. While the country is nice it does have the downside of leaving you isolated. Plus 4 acres is a ton of grass to cut in the summer, and then all of those leaves to rake and wood to cut for the woodstove. It’s a ton of work and if we want to travel it’s not the type of place to leave unoccupied for a couple of months at a time.
We love the idea of buying an RV and touring Canada and the U.S for a year or two. Missing the winters of course! Right now an aging parent is our concern, so we will see what happens.
But at least my work can be taken on the road and all I need is access to the internet to keep things running. So we are flexible and have the freedom to do pretty much everything we want to when we are ready.
How about you?
What type of lifestyle do you want for you and your family?
Are you trying to set up a successful online business and not sure where to get started? Or is your business stuck in a rut? I think any business model can get stale and you need to always have a plan on how to improve it. This can be done in several ways including adding a new business stream to it. This is actually something I am considering right now. It’s a good idea to have income coming in from different avenues, in case one stream dries up for a while.
