Well, we finally survived another year and made it to 2017, Happy New Year. Today it feels appropriate to take a minute to reflect on last year and then think about plans and goals for 2017. While I have been planning, actually putting things into action is another matter entirely. One thing I want to take advantage of is the mornings, I love getting up early and find I can get lots done in just a few hours, as long as I stay focused.
Reflection and Thoughts for 2016
New Year’s day was the one year anniversary of losing my sister in law, Sheena, she will always be in our hearts. Then, of course, we had our share of ups and downs. The biggest highlight of the year was our son Matt getting married to Tabby. They had met on a music trip to Vancouver in their last year of high school and have been together ever since. Once Matt joined the army and got posted away from home, Tabby joined him! They started off life together in Kingston, then got posted to Quebec City and are now back in Ontario! They got married in Niagara Falls on the 21 st floor of the Marriott Hotel which overlooks the falls and is a spectacular view.
Business wise I got busy creating products, but I also tried a new venture for about 5 months which didn’t pan out in the end. I think it’s important to try different things and diversify your business income, so this year I am concentrating on a couple of projects which are based around writing. After all that is what I enjoy the most and is the backbone of my business income.
My business has been good this year, I trimmed a few expenses when I needed to and worked on time management and creating products. One of my goals for this year is to not work so many hours each day.
The worst part of my business is my internet. It totally sucks and as each month passes, the connection gets worse and worse. I think I must call the company at least once a month, if not more to try and bump up the speed. It can take hours to upload a few files that should only take 10 minutes. Unfortunately being out in the country, we are stuck as there is no other provider that we can switch too.
August was a totally stressful month as that was when we found out that our grand-daughter Elizabeth has stage 4 cancer. She was sick out in British Columbia and the hospital finally flew them home to be with family in Toronto. Currently she has gone through all her chemo treatments and is due for one more surgery to remove more of the stomach tumor. Then after that there is stem cell treatments along with immune system therapy. We just pray that she will be in the 25% of those that beat this type of cancer.
During the summer we also decided to repair our deck! This turned out to be a nightmare and totally time consuming. One of the corner posts had sunk a few times in a bear or fox den, had to build it ontop without knowing it! At first we wanted to hire a contractor to rebuild it for us. The prices were absolutely crazy so we decided to fix it ourselves, we had built it back when we first moved in. By the end of the summer we had the deck straightened out, new deck boards put on and a nice new set of stairs. We couldn’t decide on a railing so it’s sitting there over the winter with no railing. But it sure makes it easier to shovel all the snow off. Will get it put on in the spring.
The reason we are doing these repairs is we have decided it’s time to move on. We have made a nice profit on the house and want to cash in on the value and add some more money into our retirement fund. This spring we will put it on the market and see what happens. It’s a perfect property for anyone who wants to live in the country, with lots of wildlife but be close to town. Other buyers would be those that want privacy and peace and quiet. The last market would be those who want to live off the land and like to hunt.
Overall the year went by pretty quickly. We visited Matt and Tabby by the Ottawa River, what a gorgeous location to be. Not sure about the winter months, they have more snow than us! Looking forward to 2017. I want to scale down a few projects, work on writing some books and freeing up my time. I am working on my goals and plans for the upcoming year, which I will share with you in my next post.
